The COVID-19 pandemic has formed deep disruptions to our economy and society. Many Somaliland businesses are experiencing an adverse impact from the pandemic, which is the same as other countries fighting the disease. In prevention and response to the crisis of this pandemic, the Somaliland government imposed the country under national lockdown to prevent the spread of the virus, cause in shutting down of many businesses. The most affected businesses by the lockdown are those providing services and small informal businesses. These businesses include, amongst others, private education, transport, hotels and restaurants, recreation and culture, travel agencies, tourism, and various services.

Background

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. It is one of the emerging outbreaks in recent decades with significant public health and economic impacts. The disease has no treatment, however, the best way to prevent and slow down

transmission is to apply preventive measures including hand washing, social distancing, and movement restriction. In this context, the Ministry of National Planning and Development desired to conduct a rapid assessment of the situation, people’s opinion, and people’s perception of preventive measures and symptoms of the disease. The survey is conducting on a weekly basis and it is published in Social media including Facebook, twitters, and the website of the ministry to get representatives from the Somaliland population.

1. Key findings
Since the announcement of COVID-19 existence for Somaliland, 39 percent of the respondent heard or read the prevention guidelines for COVID 19 from social media. Approximately half (48%) of respondents who participated in the online survey reported that they had changed their behavior by leaving their houses or they stay home as a result of the prevention of the spread of the virus.
The majority of respondents (48%) indicated that it COVID-19 affected their income. As far as concerning knowledge of the virus, 26 Percent of the respondent indicated that they know both the cough and fever as a typical symptom of the COVID 19 virus.
2. About the Study
Central Statistics Department has started to collate new statistical surveys. Public Opinions and Lifestyle Survey is weekly information on people’s experiences and opinions on coronavirus pandemic, the survey covering the period 23 April 2020 to 29 April 2020 to understand the impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on people, households, and communities in Somaliland. These results will give an insight into how our personal, home, and work lives are changing and what the impact is on our well-being and the communities in which we live.
